As we continue “distance learning” with the prospect that school will not reopen for the 2019-2020 school year we want to explain our “distance learning” strategy in more detail. A prominent feature of our distance learning strategy is a “virtual school day” (9:00 am – 2:00 pm) Monday through Friday. The “virtual school day” will be separated into two structured “learning periods”. Student assignments will be communicated to parents/guardians via ClassDojo.com (instead of the school website (pc-ds.org). ClassDojo will also be used for teacher, student, parent daily communication as required. Zoom.com (or other video/audio) App will be used for daily conference with students and a weekly conference with parents/guardians.
A model for our virtual school day is as follows: Each teacher will convene their class each morning (Monday – Friday) at 9:00 am by having each student logon to a Zoom (or other conference application) “Meeting”. The teacher will introduce the “Study plan for the day.” And provide additional instructional information as required. This session will typically be about 30 minutes but may be longer if desired. The student is expected to work independently or with assistance from parent/guardian on the first learning assignment for the day for about 1 hour (can be more time or less at parent/guardian discretion).
At about 11:00 am, the teacher will communicate with students via ClassDojo to review earlier work and give instructions for the second learning assignment for the day. The student is expected to work independently or with assistance from parent/guardian on the second assignment for the day for about 1 hour (can be more time or less at parent/guardian discretion).
At about 1:45 pm each teacher will convene their class by having each student logon to a Zoom (or other conference application) “Meeting” .The teacher will close-out the virtual school day by 2:00 pm.Although the virtual-school day ends at 2:00 pm students should continue with additional homework as assigned by teachers.
Teachers will be accessible for student assistance via, ClassDojo or email (pcds001@gmail.com) from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. In addition, video conferences can be scheduled if needed.
I understand that teachers, students and parents currently are doing many of the things described above. I also understand that some students may not be able to attend all sessions prescribed in the “virtual school day” and that teachers may need to establish a study program for individual students. Lastly, any of the activities described above can be modified by agreement between teachers and parents.
